The star was due to celebrate his 81st birthday next week but news of his passing earlier this month has now been confirmed. His passing was confirmed in a statement on the official website for Green Coil Records, which reads: "We are sad to announce the passing of our dear friend and musical collaborator Willie Wright earlier this month in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. "In addition to his family and many friends, he leaves legions of loyal fans worldwide, who will keep his unique musical legacy alive." Wright began his lengthy music career with doo-wop bands in the 1960s before his own solo success. His seminal album Telling the Truth was released in 1977, but his solo career began with his first album Lack of Education, which was released in 1971. Well-known tracks from Wright include Right On For The Darkness, I'm So Happy Now, and Nantucket Island. Willie had also penned the lyrics for tracks for notable artists such as James Taylor and Sly Stone. Telling the Truth found a second life in 2011 when it was re-issued over 34 years since its original release. The second release of the album brought about renewed interest in Wright's prolific career. His daughter Lisa published a message to her late father as news of his death first broke through record label Numero Group's official Instagram page.
